A telephone system, private branch exchange (in short: PBX) or private automatic branch exchange (PABX) is a telephone exchange that connects multiple end devices such as telephones, fax machines and answering machines with each other as well as with one or several public telephone network lines.

The advantages of a telephone system include free internal calls between the end devices connected to the system and better utilisation of chargeable trunk connections, as it is not necessary for each end device to be equipped with an individual subscriber line.

Further advantages comprise additional individual performance features such as forwarding of calls, speed-dial, call diversion and a hotline. In many cases this involves a so-called call station, which accepts calls centrally and then transfers them to the relevant persons.
